Pep Guardiola has been struggling with back issues for a considerable period and has undergone multiple surgeries. The Spanish tactician had to rely on assistant coach Juanma Lillo for training support during last season’s historic treble-winning journey.
With Guardiola’s hospitalization and surgery, assistant coach Juanma Lillo will continue to oversee the training of Manchester City’s players in the upcoming matches against Sheffield United and Fulham in the Premier League.
“Recently, Manchester City’s head coach suffered intense back pain and flew to Barcelona for emergency spinal surgery conducted by Dr. Mireia Illueca. The surgery was successful, and Pep is now on the path to recovery and rehabilitation in Barcelona.
During Pep’s absence, assistant coach Juanma Lillo will supervise the first-team training sessions on the pitch and will take on touchline duties until Pep’s return.
He is expected to be back after the upcoming international break. Everyone at Manchester City wishes Pep a speedy recovery and looks forward to his return at the Etihad Stadium,” the club announced on its official website.
Manchester City has kicked off the season perfectly with two wins, defeating Burnley and later Newcastle, securing a second-place position in the Premier League standings (tied on points with Brighton but trailing in goal difference).
