The main reason behind the Englishman’s decision, as explained, is that Pep Guardiola is gradually changing his tactics, with the wing-back position no longer a priority for the Spanish strategist. He has shown a preference for the successful experiment with a back three formation that brought Man City triumph last season.
Sharing his thoughts with BT Sport, the English defender said, “As a true leader, I will always have the desire to give my all whenever I step onto the football pitch, and I believe I have demonstrated that during my time at Man City. It serves as motivation and an example for young players to follow.”
“I have given everything for this shirt, and now I am also feeling tired, perhaps due to my age, as I’m already 33 and no longer as young and physically fit to play at the same high intensity as before. I think it’s time for me to explore and experience a new environment before officially retiring and closing the chapter on my professional playing career.”
