Mason Greenwood’s statement: “I acknowledge that I have made mistakes in my relationships and I take responsibility for the situations that led to the social media post. I am learning how to understand my responsibilities to set a good example as a professional footballer, and I am focusing on the greater responsibilities of being a father and a good husband. Today’s decision is part of the collaborative process between Manchester United, my family, and myself. The best decision for all of us is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence would not disturb the club. I am thankful to the club for their support since I joined at the age of 7. MU will always have a place in my heart.”
On the official website, MU declared, “Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations against Mason Greenwood. Our process began in February 2023, after all allegations against Greenwood were dropped.”
“Based on the available evidence, we have concluded that the online material does not provide a complete picture, and Greenwood did not commit the offenses he was initially accused of. However, Greenwood admits he made a mistake and he must take responsibility.”
“All parties involved, including Greenwood, recognize the challenges he would face in restarting his career at Man Utd. Therefore, both sides have agreed that the most appropriate course of action is for Greenwood to leave Old Trafford. We will now work to find a solution for him.”
Mason Greenwood is the brightest talent Manchester United has produced in recent years. Since his debut for the club in 2019, the forward has played a total of 129 matches and scored 35 goals across all competitions. Currently, he has 2 years left on his contract with the Red Devils, earning a weekly wage of £75,000.
Greenwood’s promising future at Old Trafford came to an end after he was embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal, involving the alleged rape of his girlfriend in January 2022. The striker was indefinitely suspended by MU to cooperate with the police investigation. He faced multiple charges and had to pay bail to avoid temporary imprisonment.
By February 2023, all charges against Greenwood were dropped, and he was declared a free man. However, he still faced opposition from the local fan community as well as women’s rights and domestic violence activists.
MU spent 6 months conducting an internal investigation in the hopes of reintegrating Greenwood into the first team, but the intense public backlash prevented this from happening.
