Real Madrid’s formidable goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is set for an extended period on the sidelines due to a severe knee injury.

The Belgian international is believed to have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a training session and is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days.

An official statement on Real Madrid’s website reads: “Following the examination of Thibaut Courtois, the player has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming days.” Real Madrid’s prospects for the upcoming season have taken a hit with the star goalkeeper’s ACL injury, as the club announced. This injury could potentially sideline the Belgian player for a significant portion of the season, and Real Madrid now faces the challenge of coping without Karim Benzema while striving for La Liga glory.

With Andriy Lunin as the sole backup option in the squad, Real Madrid is reportedly considering transfer market options to bolster their lineup. In recent seasons, Courtois has been a crucial defensive pillar for Real Madrid, making crucial saves during pivotal moments that contributed to their triumphs in La Liga, Champions League, and more.

Even with the addition of Jude Bellingham, Carlo Ancelotti still has many questions to address before the season for Los Blancos, and

this injury only adds to their burdens.

The potential for injuries and departures could prove overwhelming for Real Madrid as they navigate this transitional season, dedicating time to Kylian Mbappe while also identifying the next head coach as Ancelotti departs for Brazil at the season’s end.

With the injury occurring late in the preseason ahead of their La Liga opener against Athletic Club on August 12, the team faces time constraints. The transfer window closes on August 31, and at the very least, a goalkeeper will need to be sourced from somewhere, with David de Gea being a potential option given his current free agent status after Manchester United’s acquisition of Andre Onana.
